Building a comprehensive product to generate and manage shipping rates

OpenBorder is a flexible cross-border logistics provider that enables entrepreneurs and executives of top brands to grow their businesses globally by simplifying complex logistics. The first crucial step for potential partners involves assessing OpenBorder's competitive shipping rates.
We were tasked with creating a shipping rates generator that can be used by the OpenBorder sales team in an easy and efficient way.
The Existing Method
A key requirement for any logistics company is to be able to generate accurate shipping rates and share it with their customers. The OpenBorder sales team was handling this entire process using Google Sheets.
Pain points
While Google Sheets helped get the job done, the process was far from ideal.
Time Consuming

Any tedious, manual process has a high chance of errors. These errors could lead to heavy costs and compromised client relationships.
Limited scalability
As the number of brands and shipping routes grow, the Excel sheets get more complex. The current process was hard to scale effectively.
Poor versioning
While these shipping rate sheets were updated on a regular basis, it was difficult to determine which version provides the most up-to-date data. This can cause data duplication, versioning conflicts, and loss of updates.
WHAT WE BUILT
Phase I
A comprehensive Shipping Rates Generator
Our goal was to design an intuitive application. It had to be prepared for all potential scenarios and generate fast and accurate shipping rates. Additionally, we designed it in a way that the sales team can generate and share the shipping rates with their customers in 3 easy steps.
Phase II
Shipping Rates Manager
We created two separate modules to manage shipping rates.
These modules update surcharge rates from carriers. They also activate or deactivate rates for specific routes or carriers.
Previously, the OpenBorder team had to find and update these values in Excel sheets. This was time consuming and error-prone.
By using the modules we created, the OpenBorder team can easily update thousands of shipping rates. They can also upload new surcharge rates or use the 'bulk update' feature.

Improved workflows and productivity
The Shipping Rates Generator enables the OpenBorder sales team to quickly generate and distribute shipping rates, while managing them centrally instead of dealing with multiple Excel sheets. This has significantly increased their productivity and efficiency.
